Grade One
Grade 1
4-Week Program | 45-Minute Classes
Grade One lays the groundwork for a strong, trusting relationship between you and your dog. Your dog will learn to respond reliably to cues, walk politely on leash, and greet people calmly, while becoming comfortable with everyday handling like grooming and vet visits. Early “place” exercises introduce calm focus and self-settling, setting the stage for future learning. By the end of this course, your dog will be confident, attentive, and ready to explore new skills with you, making everyday life together calmer and more enjoyable.
Core Learning Outcomes:
By the end of Grade One, your dog will be able to:
- Respond reliably to their name and have handler engagement.
- Maintain basic body positions (sit, down, stand) on cue.
- Walk politely on a loose leash in low-distraction environments.
- Remain calm and comfortable during basic handling, grooming, and vet visits.
- Greet people politely and with composure.
- Begin developing self-control and focus through “place” exercises.
Exit Exam & Policies
At the conclusion of Grade One, dogs participate in an exit exam to determine readiness for Grade Two. This assessment is not pass/fail; it simply ensures each dog advances at a pace appropriate for their learning, reinforcing confidence and mastery. If a dog is not quite ready to move on, repeating a grade is completely normal and encouraged, allowing them to strengthen skills and build confidence before advancing.
Administrative & Attendance Policies:
- Dogs must be up to date with vaccinations, including the Bordetella vaccine.
- If you have adopted a dog from a reputable rescue within the last 14 days, please email the office a copy of your adoption paperwork. We will arrange a 33% discount for the next available Grade 1 class.

- Cancellations made less than two weeks prior to the start date will not be refunded, so please plan carefully.
- If you miss a class, you will receive credit for a class review session during Office Hours.
- Class review sessions must be booked in advance and expire 4 months from the missed class.
